The Maxi Dress: Stylish solutions for the growing mother
I am a big fan of the Maxi Dress -- heck, who doesn't love a dress that is forgiving, feminine and versatile. I also love that this new trend will carry you through the hot summer months and transition easily with a sweet cardigan to the cool, early days of fall.
Here are some of my favorites:

Nicole Miller's Long Babydoll Dress in a brilliant exotic print
This is a yummy, sexy print that will have all eyes on you and celebrating your beauty.
Juicy Couture's Simple Ruffled Maxi is another option in a cool cotton.

Fun styles for Mommy and Baby from Michael Stars
It's' a well known fact that we love the good stuff -- the fun things that aren't just every where and those things that make a grown man want to hold a curl up with a dreamy, creamy blanket while watching a football game.
One new fabulous thing is the new Michael Stars baby line -- Mikey Stars. Made from super-soft, Supima cotton in the traditional shades that every mom loves, but in my new favorite the dip-dye -- like tie-dye but cooler and less-busy. Available in styles for girls and boys with coordinating styles for the bump-set and beyond.
Pictured above are two of our dip-dye favorites: the tank dress ($36) with the coordinating swaddling blanket ($38) -- fabulous.

Panera Bread's Bun in the Oven Salute at INOVA Fairfax
Seriously yummy, good eats and Wi-Fi teamed with a cool, family friendly atmosphere all come to mind when I think of Panera Bread. I am a fresh bagel and baked good lover and with their fabulous semolina bread -- I am a customer for life, but together, Panera and INOVA Fairfax are celebrating an especially busy month and the births of over 1,000 babies at INOVA Fairfax with a special contest and salute to mommies delivering in June with the Bun In the Oven Contest.
They will be delivering sweet, gift packages full of goodies for mom and baby, right to the beds of mommies at the hospital. And, one special baby will have a bagel named in his or her honor for the month of August.
How fun is that, a sweet treat, a rockin' gift bag and a new baby all from a great local hospital? Sounds like a plan to me.

Help us write our book...
Capitol Moms founder, Teia Collier, is teaming up with Julie Belgard of Greater Washington Therapy to edit a collect of bump to baby stories, both the funny, touching and dramatic -- to have a balanced book, we need them all. Here is our letter to moms.
Dear Moms,
Every mom has a baby story--from finding out they are pregnant to the actual birth and beyond. These are wonderful, bonding stories, both funny and dramatic, and we realized that there are very few formats in which to share them.
We are working on editing a book of bump to baby stories--particularly how you found out you were pregnant, how you told your partner/family/friends/boss.... and then what came next, and are collecting the stories of mothers around the country to be featured.
We would love to share your story along with our own. Please feel free to email your story at: bumpstories@gmail.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Julie and Teia
Cooling it down when it's hot outside
When it's hot and your skin is screaming try one of our favorite tips, Evian Spray. A secret of make-up artists, it helps moisturize and refresh skin. I love to gift it to pregnant and new mamas to help regulate temperature.
We buy the three packs and encourage mamas to keep one in the purse and in diaper bag and one in the car -- for those emergency hot flashes.
Available at www.drugstore.com, Sephora and CVS stores nationwide.

A New Favorite: Ratzerfratzer Burps and Bibs
They look almost too luxurious for daily use with the satin brocade baked with surprisingly absorbent chenille, but then you try them and find that they absorb projectile spit-up, catch running drool and are large enough to protect clothes and even survive a busy, teething two year old.
We tested the blue green tapestry and have been impressed. The bibs and burps have survived the wash, spit-up and the Grandma test. And at $18 and $20, they are a steal -- an easy way to earn oohs and aahs with a versatile product.
To see other styles and check out Ratzerfratzer's fabulous sale section, visit www.ratzerfratzer.com
Mocha Manual Guide to a Fabulous Pregnancy Now out on DVD
Girls, I want to share a fabulous resource that I have on my keeper shelf -- The Mocha Manual Guide to Fabulous Pregnancy is now on DVD.
I used the book as a primary resource with both of my pregnancies and share it with my clients, family and friends. It is a well-organized resource that highlights some of the unique circumstances that effect women of color in pregnancy and walks like a helpful friend the gambit from shaping a healthy pregnancy and preparing for delivery to managing maternity leave.
The DVD (with a coupon for a free onesie) is available now at www.walmart.com and Walmart nationwide.
Look for a special giveaway for CM and CM2B readers coming soon.

PregoPlanner: Charting your Pregnancy in style
One of my favorite tips to mamas-to-be is to get organized. Keep all of your pregnancy related information in one place -- the details of your OB-scouting and then visit information, test results, questions and contact information, hospital information, pre-baby checklists, your baby registry wish lists are among some of the things that should be kept in a centralized location.
A great way to keep it together is the PregoPlanner by Braelyn Bounty Bug.
I love that the planners come in three great styles, (my favorite) the chic zebra, pictured to the right, ultra-cute dressy and the classy chocolate. And that there are places for all the important moments and details of your pregnancy. It will also be a great memory book to remember this pregnancy and refer to during future ones.
Visit Braelyn Bounty Bug, www.braelynbountybug, for more information on this CM2B favorite.

Bump rubs: Soothing products for the tummy
A common pregnancy complaint is itchy, superdry skin on the growing tummy -- after experiencing the bump itch in both of my pregnancies; my tip is to avoid the scratching the delicately stretching skin and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
These are two of my favorites.
1) Mustela's 9 Month Maternity Stretch Marks Double Action.
This lightly scented, super-rich cream massages into the skin beautifully to put a stop to the dry dump for hours. Purchase locally at Dawn Price Baby - Eastern Market and online at http://www.mustelausa.com/stretch_marks_double_action.html
2) MamaMio's Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil - CM2B Fave!
A mildly citrus scented oil that was (and still is - I use it regularly still 3 months after Sollie's birth) a pleasure to use. My skin has a nice, not greasy, moisturized feel, a subtle sheen and even better no stretch marks.
Order at www.mamamio.com (free preggie pops with most orders for a limited time)

Trade Secrets: Teia Collier of Capitol Moms MRS talks about Maternity Fashion: 5 Tips to Great Maternity Look
Sometimes, at the Motherhood Resource Service, I get asked tips for looking great and for great maternity wear in the city. Here are some of my favorites.
1) Get great basics. Basics are the foundation of a great wardrobe. They set the tone, multi-task and do double duty. They can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. I suggest a great pair of maternity slacks, a pair of jeans, a couple of tees and camisoles in colors that work with your skin tone and enhance your glow and a wrap dress that will carry you along the nine month strech and beyond.
CM2B Faves: Ann Taylor Loft Maternity, Liz Lange for Target, Isabella Oliver and Gap Maternity
2) Don't be afraid of color. Black is not the only color in the rainbow, in fact, it's not. Poppy, blue, sunny yellow, shades of royal and creamy neutrals are so in-this season. Let them enhance your glow.
CM2B Faves: Old Navy Maternity, Childish Maternity and RockStar Maternity
3) Invest in comfortable lingerie. Fabulous, comfortable lingerie is a must. Nothing says unflattering like a bra that is digging into your flesh or a panty that won't stay put.
CM2B Faves: Bella Materna, Bravado Designs!, and Mimi Maternity
4) Accesories are your friend. You can liven up any outfit or change the look of a classic basic with a pair of sparkly bangles, a long chain and a fabulous handbag.
CM2B Faves: South Moon Under
5) Pamper yourself -- remember your hands and feet. Manicures and pedicures are the perfect treat for your growing body. An extra special treat is to have your significant other massage warm lotion into those swollen peds.
CM2B Fave: Nail Taxi

CM2B Loves:Hip, Rockin Fashion for the Bump-set - Rock Star Maternity
Who doesn't love a great look? I love a great look that goes from the bump and beyond, that's what you'll find with the super hip and rock-star style from Rock starmoms maternity, yoga and children's line.
Seriously cool, fellow mom Leah Brumley has come out with a line that says, "I love my bump. I'm fabulous, and I want to show it." without going the cutesy floral and pastel route. There are fun camis, original tees, calming yoga sets and the most adorable Jimmy Hendrix little girl outfit that my daughter loves.
We tried the short-sleeve Funky Momma Tee in creamy soft cotton with a chocolate brown print. It fit beautifully and earned us several compliments from random strangers.

Fenangling Maternity Leave - How will you do it?
When I talk to mothers around town, or with friends in other places, I find that maternity leave in traditional terms is becoming more and more scarce. Either moms and moms-to-be simply can't afford to take the full time allowed through the Family Medical Leave Act, their jobs aren't accomodating or for some other reason -- these days of healing, bonding, nututing and recovery are growing shorter and shorter with each decade that passes.
Here is an article from MSN, Take the Labor Out of Maternity Leave
MP Dunleavey discusses the situation that is facing some women and I encourage you to read the article, talk with your significant other and your employer.
For us, it is a work in progress. I have gone back to work part-time and thankfully, I can write from home, but we want to know how did you do it? Or how will you do it? You can leave your comments here.

Sol Loves - Dwell Studio Plush Blanket- Bringing Home Preemie #1

We use it in the stroller, on the sofa or as a plush addition to tummy-time. It's a steal at $14.99. Since my Z loves it as much as Sol does, we are going to have to grab a couple more.

What I'm loving now: LaVanila Vanilla Grapefruit
It's cold here, really, really cold... and coming from north Texas where it is usually warm anyway, this 11 and 17 degrees weirdness, is just that, weird, but I can remind myself of the warm and steamy days of summer with LaVanilla's Vanilla Grapefruit Body Cream and Fragrance Rollerball.
It was a late night, my little one was up and reminding me that young babies have awkward sleeping routines and I was watching HSN, yes, the Home Shopping Network. Did you know that Sephora has a regular boutique with great products at even better prices? I found that I can shop for fabulous products from the comfort of my own couch, ohh and addictive combination.
I was a little nervous about buying perfume online without trying it first, but I loved the idea of a healthy fragrance and with a bump sometimes you want just the very best. I wanted products with active botanicals, pure essential oils, and antioxidants to wrap your skin in healthy, nurturing goodness -- Lavanila delivered. I was pleasantly surprised and rewarded with compliment, after unsolicited compliment.
Vanilla Grapefruit is a warm, musky vanilla, with a bright note of sunny grapefruit. It's not the syrupy, nauseating ickiness that is so often called vanilla and that cream is just that a long lasting cream that I used in the hospital to soothe the rough spots and remind me after a difficult delivery that I am beautiful and this body is an awesome, powerful, graceful machine.
You can find the LaVanila line of products at Sephora stores nationwide, www.sephora.com or like I did at www.hsn.com

CM2B Picks from Juicy Couture Mama
Lately in my randomly timed web travels, I find myself looking for things that catch my eye, make me smile or bring a bit of luxury to my increasingly busy days.
Here are my picks from the new Juicy Couture maternity line.
The Jacquard Diaper Bag with matching "Couture Baby" changing pad and bib. I love the look of this bag with its gold toned hardware and leather accents and handles. Nothing perks up an outfit or your everyday mom uniform of jeans and a great T like a great bag.
And the Haute Mama tank, what can I say, it's fun, easy dressing and comes in great basic colors, black, pink and white with coordinating lettering.
Pictures and both available at Due Maternity

The Girls are Growing... Nursing Bras with Oomph
One perk of being a new, nursing motherhood is that my breasts are fabulous. Yes, I said it; and, they are, but a side effect of my new glorious cleavage is finding bras that fit, feel nice and survive my washing.
Here are my favorites.
1) Bravado's Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra: "Designed to Melt into Your Body" (Ivory above)
This bra is my everyday favorite. It is soft, comfy and gives a beautiful, smooth shape under t-shirts with no nursing pad or nipple show-through. There is also a removable liner that I find useful for preventing leak-through. It comes in three basic colors, black, butterscotch and ivory. $45
2) Bella Materna's Adjustable Anytime Bralet (Slate Bra above)
The fabric that this bra is made of is amazing. It feels luxurious, silky smooth against the skin and gives great support without underwires. I have worn this bra, nursing or not, pregnant or not and it looks great everytime. What I also love about this bra is that I can just rinse it out in the sink and let it dry, and it does, quickly and beautifully. This one also comes in the basics, plus a lovely slate blue and a pinky blush. I recommend this bra to friends, regardlesss of their maternal status. $55
Pictures: Bravado and Bella Materna.

Welcome into 2008 - Desire List Challenge
Each year, we make half-hearted resolutions and plans for things that sometimes never see the light of day again. This year, I challenge you to complete an exercise that I have found to be useful and worth the time it takes.
It is called Crafting a Desire List. Basically, it is a thoughtfully drafted list of adventures, things and dreams that you want to have, experience or partake in. I spend about a week, thinking, envisioning and writing, but nothing goes on the list that I cannot see clearly in my head. I figure, if I can't envision it, then on to the next thing. I remind myself that anything is possible (I could give you a long list of impossibles and "seriously unlikelies" that have come to pass in my life.) and get to writing. When you complete your list, post it in a safe, visible place to remind you and keep you focused on the prize.
I will offer one word of caution, remember that a woman's desire is a powerful thing and when you put this kind of energy into anything, something is bound to happen -- so be mindful of the process.
Many blessings to you and yours,
Teia
